SC’s second-place ranking got you down? Well, take heart in the fact that we are nevertheless the Pac-10′s “clutch team past.” We’re not really sure what that means, but here’s the evidence in favor:

The record speaks for itself. The Trojans:

Own 11 national titles in five different decades.

Own the highest all-time winning percentage vs. NCAA opponents of any conference (.704). That percentage ranks seventh among all Division I schools.

Own a winning record vs. every Pac-10 team, ranging from 55-8-4 (Washington State) to 42-28-7 (UCLA).

Own a winning record vs. every other BCS conference, including a 17-10-1 mark vs. the SEC.

Own a 30-16 record in bowl games (.652). Those 30 wins rank second all-time to Alabama, which has 31.

Own seven wins over No. 1-ranked teams, second only to Notre Dame’s eight.

History? It’s not just one great coach; it’s four: Howard Jones, John McKay, John Robinson and Pete Carroll.

Clutch teams also produce clutch performers: Seven Heisman Trophy winners.

And so on. Anyway, if nothing else it’s nice to have that edge over the SEC.

The Bleacher Report has come up with a trap game for each conference. The Pac-10 entry, not surprisingly, involves the Trojans:

The Game: USC at Washington State, October 18

Before: Arizona State

Why it Will be a Trap Game: Arizona State appears to be main contender in 2008 to end USC’s hegemony in the Pac-10. QB Rudy Carpenter will be in his senior year, it’s the second season under turnaround specialist Dennis Erickson, and the Sun Devils have seven returning starters on both sides of the ball. Given what Oregon has lost, ASU is the clear No. 2 in the conference this fall.

The week after that crucial game for USC comes a road match in Pullman, Washington. Washington State’s team is a bit thin in the first year of the Paul Wulff regime, and he is installing a new offense and defense there. His no-huddle spread offense could be dangerous against USC if the Trojans are napping the week after a big game.

Plus, USC won by only six the last time it played at Washington State, and if they can lose to Stanford last year they can lose to anyone. If things click for the Cougars by mid-October, they could be dangerous in this game.

Why it May Not Matter: Did I mention Washington State’s team is thin? It is, and it lost scholarships to Academic Progress Report-related penalties. Plus, there has been a rash of disciplinary and academic problems there. If injuries strike at all, they could torpedo the Cougars’ season entirely. Besides, the new schemes may not have gelled by this point, severely limiting Washington State’s chances in this game.

So I guess the takeaway here is that USC may or may not lose to Washington State.

As SI considers the ‘Pac-10 vs. SEC’ question, Bill Trocchi seeks some outside help in constructing his latest conference power rankings:

For this particular exercise, I forwarded Ken White, the senior oddsmaker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants, 10 hypothetical matchups. Keep in mind that White’s company sets the odds for 90 percent of the casinos in Nevada. These matchups were created by the following: The teams in the SEC and Pac-10 were ranked 1-12 and 1-10 based on SI.com’s current 119. In an effort to be as balanced as possible, the SEC’s sixth and seventh teams (Arkansas, Kentucky) were thrown out. So the top five teams in the SEC were matched up against the top five teams in the Pac-10, and the bottom five teams in the SEC were matched up against the bottom five teams in the Pac-10. Seems fair, right?

The results

USC over LSU by 3.

Florida over Cal by 3½.

Oregon over Alabama by 3.

South Carolina over Washington by 8½.

Arizona State over Georgia by 1.

Tennessee over Washington State by 7.

UCLA over Vanderbilt by 7.

Oregon State over Mississippi State by 7.

Auburn over Arizona by 4.

Ole Miss, Stanford is a pick-’em.

show a slight edge for the Pac-10.

So there you have it. The Pac-10 squeaks out a 5-4-1 record in these 10 matchups. Armed with this new information, and given the Pac-10′s record vs. BCS foes this year is 6-2 while the SEC’s is 4-3, and considering the Pac-10 won the only real matchup between the two conferences, the Pac-10 grabs the top slot this week.

It’s a little bit early to get too excited about these results, but we’ll take ‘em all the same.

An ingenious SC fan is trying to give away tickets to the Washington St game. (Anytime I can mention something related to Magnum PI, I will.)

Finally, it looks like Tank Top Watch is off tonight as the weather in Miami does not look good. And I was so looking forward to what the ESPN producers would put Erin Andrews in.

The weekend opens with Texas A&M at Miami and Erin Andrews probably in a tank top—YEAH! (Erin will also be in Tampa for South Florida, so it might be a tank top twofer.)

We’ll see if Coach Fran really has a team that can compete with Texas and Oklahoma.

The GE/NBC train wreck returns with “Sparty” coming to South Bend. Right now, I think ND needs to worry about positive rushing yards before it worries about points.

Ron Franklin and Ed Cunningham are following Ohio State around: they get the Buckeyes Big 11 opener at N’western after seeing them throttle the Huskies in Seattle. Michigan gets 4 home games in a row; nice job, Mr. Big 11 Schedule Maker. And we’ll see if Penn State is as good as Herbie says they are.

CBS brings you to Baton Rouge for the Head Ball Coach and the Gamecocks’ visit. Gameday and the ESPN Primetime game (Mike Patrick shut up) are in Tuscaloosa as Georgia looks to get to 1-1 in conference.

ABC will show part of the country Wazzu at USC while Brent and Kirk head to Madison for Iowa at Wisconsin.

Finally, the night ends in Pasadena as UCLA tries to bounce back against Jake Locker and the Huskies.

The general nationwide belief that USC is going to lose at least one, if not all, of its tough three-game stretch against Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame took some strange twists and turns this weekend. Oregon was thrashed by Wazzu, a team USC managed to beat at the Palouse.

But the Ducks’ performance was a footnote compared to the efforts put out by one-loss “national title contenders” Cal and Notre Dame. The Golden Bears needed overtime to knock off Washington, a midlevel Pac-10 team playing with its backup quarterback.

And if a one-loss contender rallying to escape a midlevel Pac-10 team with a backup QB sounds familiar, that’s because Mighty Notre Dame did the same thing.

We’re not saying that USC isn’t going to lose to at least one of those teams, but after watching their upcoming opponents this weekend, we just don’t expect USC to roll over and cower in fear from any of them. Then again, if they barely escape OSU and Stanford, we might be persuaded to change our minds.
