Bowl viewership declines

The Wizard of Odds breaks it down. The 2007 data show that either Florida and FSU were big for TV or Kentucky and Michigan fans didn’t travel.

Recruiting rankings

Rivals announces their final Top 100 of the recruiting season. It’s pretty spread-offense heavy. Ohio State leads with 8 of the top 100, and what Scott Wolf calls a lackluster USC recruiting class is second with 7 of the top 100. But those of you who know the Phil-osophy of Football (line play is 90% [...]

Another what-if moment

Even CFN, which which ripped us all year, has us winning their fictional playoff. *sigh* So can we get shirts made saying we won the title from “XXXX” and list everyone who said we would win a playoff? I mean, Auburn made rings for basically an even weaker premise …

LSU isn’t faster than Ohio St

Or at least that’s what Jonathan Chait would say, given that he debunked the speed myth six years ago: Like many myths, this one contains a bit of truth. Southern teams play outside their region only during two parts of the year: in September nonconference games, and in the bowls. Since the former take place [...]

Biased local columnist agrees

This time from the LA Daily News: Want to know how otherworldly USC’s football program has become? That USC team that just pushed Illinois around all over the Rose Bowl on Tuesday might be the best team in the country. And the worst USC team in the past six years. Also, I like how this [...]

Schlabach sure is a big fan

Key paragraph from Schlabach’s piece: The No. 7 Trojans are better than both No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 LSU, which will play for the BCS championship Monday night in the Louisiana Superdome. The Buckeyes couldn’t even beat No. 13 Illinois, which was so clearly overmatched by USC. It’s a shame the Trojans can’t [...]

Another rousing start for the BCS

It’s a good thing the Rose Bowl was more interested in preserving its “tradition,” because USC-Georgia wouldn’t have been nearly as fun to watch or as relevant as USC-Illinois and Hawaii-Georgia. I hope those bowl ratings Gordon Gee was hiding behind are absolutely soaring with this slate.

December Madness

Turns out the folks behind the Kansas City Star’s playoff bracket have done a little simulation of their own, which they call December Madness. Currently they’ve settled on the Final Four: OSU vs. OU and Va Tech vs. SC (who beat LSU to get there, by the way). Also, they’ve predicted each of the bowl [...]

Well, this is a nice consolation prize

Nice to know that the two teams playing for the national title aren’t even deemed finals-worthy by SI readers…
