After all the hype, I gotta say that O.J. Mayo has been just about what I thought he’d be: 20 points per game, flashes of brilliance, more flashes of inconsistence, but overall not a bad teammate and somewhere between LeBron James and Sebastian Telfair. I wish him well and I think he’ll have a decent pro career, and I think the collateral benefit to the program is that other high-profile recruits may put USC on their list because he did. So again, a moderate thumbs up to Mayo’s one season in Troy (and they probably would have gone 16-16 without him, considering their injuries).
But the biggest downside to the O.J. Mayo tenure is that we get to hear ENDLESS references to “Hold the Mayo” and other condiment-related jokes, which have got to be the most tired, played out, lame sports puns I’ve heard in a while. So if you really want to have fun during March Madness, take a drink every time someone makes one of those lame condiment jokes.
