Well guys, probably the only USC fan who enjoyed that game was Mitch Mustain, and maybe he’s wondering if the Razorbacks still have a spot for him (believe me they do). And while the USC Trojans might be playing like the second best Trojans team in college football, I think we all need a little dose of reality.
During the 1996 season, when the Urban Poet was a bright eyed sophomore soaking up the fun and sun in Los Angeles and rocking out to “Tha Crossroads” by Bone Thugz ‘n’ Harmony, and CommishRob, much like the “teens” on Beverly Hills 90210, began the first of many junior years, our Trojans, under the coaching of Delon Washington and the play of John Robinson (or was it the other way around?) went 6-6.
In 1997 we went 6-5, 8-5 in 1998, 6-6 in 1999, and 5-7 in 2000. (The fate of the Bone Thugz was equally poor, with Flesh ‘n’ Bone sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2000.) After a 6-6 record in 2001, we started to turn things around… What changed? Well, certainly all of Troy mourned the graduation of LaVale Woods, but that can’t be it… Maybe it was Carson Palmer? But wait, but he QB’d some pretty bad teams… Well anyway, that genius Mike Garrett must have done something smart!
I know you’ve seen a lot of SC football, CommishRob. After all, Vince Evans was the starting quarterback your freshman year and Carson Palmer was in the seat during your final senior year. You’ve roomed with 5 of 7 Heisman Trophy winners, and Todd Marinovich used to call you dad. So you, of all people, must understand that USC football is cyclical. We are down now, and will be on top again—maybe it has something to do with coaching, or maybe the current guy got us our 3 err 2 (ish) national titles.
On a final note, I encourage all of you to visit Heritage Hall before all of the trophies are removed and replaced with a tiny replica of Reggie Bush’s mom’s house.
