While he is insistent on throwing at Tuesday’s practice, the Dwarf will have to prove to Coach Carroll he is ready.

USC coach Pete Carroll said it was too early to make a decision.

“Same deal. We’re going to go with Mark as the starter going into practice (Tuesday),” Carroll said. “We’ll see where we are. Mark’s going to get all the reps with the first string.

“It’s Mark’s day tomorrow. Then we’ll see what happens with John. We’ll just wait, watch, see what he feels like afterward.”

There’s a bigger problem, though. What is the plan for this team? Get healthy and try and make a run at 11-1 or to play the kids and fight to 9-3 and be prepared for next year (assuming that Sanchez has anything)? I think he does but apparently another over-hyped kid from the SEC is making them drool in practice. Again, The Dwarf from Shreveport was always great in practice but he can’t take it to the field, so let’s hold off on anointing Mustain the 2008 starter. If we struggle with this Notre Dame team this week, I vote for playing the kids and taking our lumps.

I have to disagree with you on this one, Commish. Let me first say that I think you’re right in your overall analysis, this team certainly doesn’t seem to have that championship quality. But on October 16, I think it’s a little early to be preparing for next year. There have been a few examples of the BCS getting blown up on the last couple of Saturdays of the season, just when everyone seemed to have everything all figured out. If I remember right, Tennessee, UCLA, and Kansas State were all undefeated going into that last Saturday back in ’98, and only Tennessee survived the day. Or check out 2001, where EVERYONE seemed to lose on that last Saturday, and some people were even pushing for a two-loss Colorado team to play Miami for the title after the day was over. And we know all about a 13-9 score on the last major Saturday of 2006…

I guess my point is, there’s still a long way to go. Trips to Berkeley, Eugene, and Tempe (and their overall play) make it less likely that this ‘SC team will run the table. But in this crazy season, even a 10-2 finish might get them a BCS bid. In mid-October, I think it’s too early to play for a pre-New Year’s Day bowl in 2007, or to get a look at the roster for 2008.
