Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen has taken some heat recently for saying that the Pac-10 presidents would rather leave the BCS than support the Plus-One model recently rumored. Now, SI college football writer Stewie Mandel is calling Hansen’s bluff. Mandel believes that Hansen is just talking out of is a$$ and that the Pac-10 would compromise eventually, in order to guarantee that a Pac-10 team would have a shot at the national title instead of just playing in the Rose Bowl against a Big Eleven (soon to be Midwest 12?) opponent.

Now here at Student Body Right, we are definitely concerned about Hansen’s posturing. Any talk about bolting from the BCS is not a good thing for the evolution of the conference (or the sport, for that matter). Deciding a champion on the field is all we want; is that really too much to ask? Something is wrong with college football when it’s the only sport where a team can win a title without playing in the alleged title game. (USC 2003)

Maybe the Commish could spend less time pimping the Rose Bowl (which doesn’t need it) and more time wrangling some better bowl tie-ins for the #2/#3/#4/etc. conference finishers.
