The following comes from Mandel’s mailbag (if you can sift through a hundred questions about why USC isn’t getting punished by the NCAA):
For the first time in my life, myself and 11 of my friends are starting a college fantasy football league. We will only choose from teams in the SEC, ACC and either the Big Ten/Pac-10/Big 12. Traditional scoring as with most NFL fantasy leagues will be the rule. That being said, if you had the first pick in our draft, who do you go with?
–Jim, Gainesville, Ga.I know fantasy football scoring tends to put greater importance on running backs, but I would still draft Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell for the inevitable, PlayStation numbers he will put up. (And I think it goes without saying that anyone fortunate enough to have the No. 1 pick in an all-Division I-A league should not waste two seconds before selecting Hawaii’s Colt Brennan). If you do the math and decide a running back is still your best option, then choose either Ray Rice or Mike Hart (because they’re more traditional work-horses than McFadden or Steve Slaton).
This might be good advice; we’re not sure. The more important point is that Jim & co. feel forced to limit the conferences they draft from because of the staggering size of the player pool otherwise. Our question to them is, why not pursue a more elegant solution?

Agreed that this format of Fantasy CF is the best. With all the players out there and the innovation of college football coaches vs. NFL coaches it is much more fun to root for the team as a whole. That way if a stud freshman pops up or we are treated to some great trickery (Boise St. anyone?) it helps your team instead of hurts it. I for one want to be happy if I see a double-reverse-flea-flicker-option-pass-to-the-center-eligible and not be pissed cause my quarterback wasn’t the one who threw the ball!

Does it surprise anyone that the Jim the Georgian and his buddies wanted to do an imbred version of college fantasy football. He wants to limit the gene pool, so to speak, by playing kissing cousins with only three BCS conferences.
Can we get some sort of countdown on your site till the launch of SBR 2008? I need to know how long till i beat down Randy for the 6th straight year.

You have been sniffing that Notre Dame helmet paint haven’t you?? Gold flakes aren’t good for the brain… This is our third year and everyone knows that 4th times a charm… Jared AND the MAC conference are going to get stomped out like Andre Gurode (go ahead.. wikipedia it… I’ll wait)… And come on now paint sniffer, SBR 2008? lets start by counting down to 2007, now THAT is a solid idea.
