Not to jump ahead of ourselves (and don’t worry, we’ll continue breaking down the Trojan moments that made the list), but Ivan Maisel has concluded his countdown of the top 100 college football moments of all time. No doubt fans will quibble with the list – because that’s what fans do, they quibble – but for the most part he got it right. The only obvious error was his ranking Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary ahead of “The Play,” but since Ivan’s a Stanford guy, we can forgive him for that.
Befitting the most storied program in the history of the sport, Notre Dame makes the list more than any other school, with 18 appearances. Alabama is next with 12, followed by USC with 10. In the sport’s big picture, that sounds about right. Right behind the big three were Miami with 9 appearances, Nebraska and Florida State with 7, and Ohio State and Michigan fittingly neck-and-neck with Texas at 6 appearances. In a reminder that they used to dominate the college football landscape as much as anyone, Army is next with 5 appearances.
Vince Young’s scamper into the end zone to win the 2006 Rose Bowl is ranked fifth, also a fitting spot for an epic end to an epic game. It makes us feel a little better about giving up a chance at history to a Texas team that a) would have lost to that USC team seven times out of ten; and b) yet was completely deserving of the national championship. So yeah, it does ease the sting a little.
Oh, wait, no it doesn’t. But this list kinda does. So kudos to Ivan, who no doubt hears the phrase, “The band is out on the field!” in his deepest, darkest nightmares.

[...] While Ivan Maisel tried to say that the Futie to Phalen play was the best in College Football history, he is wrong. The guys at College Football News, on the other hand, get it right by taking us back almost 25 years to the play that kept John Elway from ever playing in a bowl game. Interestingly enough, #2 on the CFN list is the Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl—the best 4th quarter in any game we can remember. [...] Some say the Flutie-to-Phalen Hail Mary, others say The Play. In defense of the latter, this first-person account from Michael Silver is good reading. Posted by gpen Filed in Uncategorized, Miami, Cal, Stanford, “The 100″, Boston College [...]
